Formation of Anticyclones above Topographic Depressions

چکیده
Abstract Long-lived anticyclonic eddies (ACs) have been repeatedly observed over several North Atlantic basins characterized by bowl-like topographic depressions. Motivated these previous findings, the authors conduct numerical simulations of spindown initialized in idealized bowls. In experiments with one or two isopycnal layers, it is found that a bowl-trapped AC an emergent circulation pattern under wide range parameters. The trapped AC, often formed repeated mergers ACs bowl interior, anomalously low potential vorticity (PV). Bottom-trapped currents as statistical equilibrium states above topographic anomalies
Oceanic geostrophic turbulence is mostly forced at the surface, yet strong bottom-trapped flows are commonly observed along topographic anomalies. Here we consider the case of a freely evolving, initially surface-intensified velocity field above a topographic bump, and show that the self-organization into a bottom-trapped current can result from its turbulent dynamics. Using equilibrium statist...

We introduce a new unsupervised learning algorithm for kernel-based topographic map formation of heteroscedastic gaussian mixtures that allows for a unified account of distortion error (vector quantization), log-likelihood, and Kullback-Leibler divergence.
متن کاملTopographic Map Formation as Statistical Inference
Neurons representing similar aspects of the world are often found close together in the cortex. It is proposed that this phenomenon can be modelled using a statistical approach. We start by using a neural network to nd the \features" that were most likely to have generated the observed probability distribution of inputs. These features can be found using a Boltzmann machine architecture, but th...
متن کاملSynaptic Rewiring for Topographic Map Formation
A model of topographic map development is presented which combines both weight plasticity and the formation and elimination of synapses as well as both activity-dependent and -independent processes. We statistically address the question of whether an activity-dependent process can refine a mapping created by an activity-independent process. A new method of evaluating the quality of topographic ...
متن کاملTopographic Map Formation by Silicon Growth Cones
We describe a self-configuring neuromorphic chip that uses a model of activity-dependent axon remodeling to automatically wire topographic maps based solely on input correlations. Axons are guided by growth cones, which are modeled in analog VLSI for the first time. Growth cones migrate up neurotropin gradients, which are represented by charge diffusing in transistor channels. Virtual axons mov...
